David Marshall admits the Odds of Scotland qualifying for Its 2020 European Championships are“slim“ after the 2-1 defeat by Russia at Hampden Park on Friday.
Steve Clarke’s side took the lead after just 10 minutes after midfielder John McGinn scored his first international goal but Russia scored both sides of half-time to shoot all three points.
Russia are next with 12 points, three behind leaders Belgium who see Hampden about Monday night, live on Sky Sports 43,, after only two wins at five fixtures, Scotland are in fourth place in Group I with six points.
Even the Nations League semi-final play-off next March offers Scotland another way in to Euro 2020 but when asked about the odds of getting there by the traditional route, the 34-year-old Wigan goalkeeper stated:“It is obviously slim.
„We all know that, we are sensible about it. Win and we have to go Monday night now and there is of the effort we know that.
„It’s a massive ask at this point but you feel better in a couple of days after you get a couple of days practice in and we will go again on Monday.
„There’s a great deal of football to be played. We need to get our minds. There’s five games.
„We know how slender it is but we have to go and win a big game.
„We clearly know Belgium really nicely. We’ll have a game plan that might change because it has turned into a match win and we will have to go now. I am certain that we will be prepared.
„Football changes speedily. We had been in the ascendancy and came off it. So we give it a go on Monday and will go.
„We all are aware of what the crowd is like here [at Hampden] if we begin and if we can get a start on Monday as we did against Russia hopefully we could maintain it. But we’re under no regrets.“
Much like most of the Scotland players, Marshall has been at a loss regarding how the home side failed to build in target and their early fantastic play.
The former Celtic, Cardiff and Hull goalkeeper said:“It was a huge game and we had the points. They are a team that is fantastic but I do not think we played that.
„It was just a disappointing result. Our game plan was to get after it and them worked extremely well.
„It was a perfect beginning for us but the game just seemed to alter. They got a lot of ownership and the goal before half-time was significant to them“
